Mental Game Tip 3: Pre-Execution Routines for Success

Pre-Execution Routines relate to the steps you follow that help you get control over your mental state and the environment you are competing in.  The routine helps you block out the distractions and allow your subconscious to communicate only the most important messages about execution of the skill to your conscious mind.  Here is a simple example:

PRE-EXECUTION ROUTINE (1 minute)

1. Step into your imaginary pre-execution preparation box and close your eyes.

2. Breathe deeply into your abdomen to the count of 2 and out to the count of 4 – while seeing yourself execute the skill with total success.

3. Repeat the following self-talk statement 2 times:  “My previous success proves I can do this. Now just go and get it done.”

4. Breathe into the count of 2 and out to the count of 4 – while seeing yourself execute the skill with total success.

5. Repeat the following self-talk statement 2 times:  “My previous success proves I can do this. Now just go and get it done.”

6. Step out of the box and onto the runway.  Say your self-talk statement one more time – and Go!
